Illusion of more is more…

Programming & periodization = movement dosage: – An illusion of developing intensive training building maximum performance…

Dosage refers to the relationship between intense, physically challenging hard training and recovery. The illusion that hard training develops physical condition stigmatizes the exercise and movement industry.

However, the physiological, boring truth is that we develop when we recover, not when we train hard and intensively. Intens training that challenges the body reduces performance, which requires a post-training recovery period in order for the body to “heal” from the challenge and then overcompensate that recovery to a greater degree of tolerance for the future challenges – supercompensation, physical progression…

If we do not recover from the hard workouts and continue to exercise progressively our fitness and body will deteriorate and our body will collapse, breakdown when we cannot recover…

So one could say, bluntly, that, in general, the sports industry does not really appreciate the recovery, because hard training and instant wins, shortcuts to happiness are universally sold to most customers in Western society. That is, customers are sold on long term lower performance, illness and sickness instead of maximizing performance, health and wellness.

Appreciation and understanding recovery means understanding stress management, both physical and mental, latter one being greater in our society today. Apparently Simple, everyday stress management tools include adequate and high quality sleep and nutrition, as well as everyday activity and restorative exercise.

How much and how effectively does our exercise and movement industry sell everyday activities? How well has it been commercialized? Especially with regard to hard and intense training? It is not… sold or commercialized …

All our systems (Myofascial, Nervous, Circulatory, Lymphatic, Internal, Psychological and Physical) underline everyday activity and light restorative training as both a foundation for health, wellness and maximum performance … Foundation…

Recovery is active, not inactive. Inactivity is one of the big reasons to the lack of recovery when one is stationary for hours, days, weeks, months and years. Understanding the basic physiology of the various systems in our body does not require the knowledge a rocket scientist to understand how their function is integrated and the relation to daily activity and restorative movement & exercise.

Periodization and programming shouldn’t begin from scheduling intensive exercises but from creating possibilities and space for recovery to make sure that the system doesn’t break but it can develop and thrive. Only when there is possibility to recover, when the system has “healed” after the previous challenge and there is possibility to “heal” after the next challenge, it’s appropriate to assign intensive exercise session in to programming.

Fortunately, the change towards more appropriate movement, exercise and training is happening, all though the change is slow. But when all the professionals in the industry take their responsibility to push the change forward, the future does looks brilliant.

I’m truly looking forward for the change of perspective and mind set of the future active citizens from the next couple of months to the rest of the life. That will give patience for appropriately timed and scheduled progressions in programming truly promoting health, wellness and maximum performance.
